Evolve: Get It Done Sessions Why I stopped relying on discipline—and started building systems instead
There’s a version of productivity that sounds good in theory.
Wake up. Stay focused. Be disciplined. Get it done.
But if I’m being honest… that’s not how it works for me.
As a solo entrepreneur, there’s no one checking in on me.
No manager. No deadlines that someone else is enforcing.
No performance reviews. No attendance points.
There’s no one saying,
“Hey… did you finish that?”
The only things I really have to rely on are:
- My own self-awareness
- And occasional client feedback (which may or may not come)
Everything else?
It’s on me.
And that sounds freeing… until it’s not.
Because what people don’t talk about enough is how easy it is to:
- Get distracted
- Feel mentally foggy
- Procrastinate on things you actually care about
- Or sit in overwhelm staring at a long to-do list
Not because you’re lazy…
but because your brain is full.
So I had to shift my mindset
I stopped asking myself,
“Why can’t I just be more disciplined?”
And started asking,
“What systems actually help me follow through?”
Because motivation comes and goes.
Discipline fluctuates.
But systems?
Systems support you on the days you don’t feel like it.
One of the most effective systems I’ve used: Body Doubling
Body doubling is simple, but powerful.
It’s the act of working alongside other people who are also focused—
not talking, not socializing, just… doing.
And something about that shared environment:
- Makes it easier to start
- Helps you stay on task
- Reduces overwhelm
- And increases follow-through
This is especially helpful if you:
- Have ADHD or identify as neurodivergent
- Struggle with distractions
- Experience brain fog
- Or find yourself procrastinating even on important things
It’s not about pressure.
It’s about environment.
